About Fixer Upper Pros
We help homeowners get renovation work priced, permitted and done by people who are actually licensed to do it.
What this site is
Fixer Upper Pros is a home renovation resource and contractor matching service for homeowners in the United States. We do two things. We publish plain language guidance on the parts of a renovation that cost people money: how a bid is put together, when a permit is required, how change orders work, and how to verify that a contractor is licensed and insured. And we connect homeowners who ask us to with home improvement and home service professionals in their area.
We are not a contractor. We do not perform construction work, we do not employ tradespeople, and we do not supervise anyone's job site. Every project you undertake is a contract between you and the company you hire.
Who we serve
Homeowners at the point of decision. Someone whose water heater just failed, someone holding three kitchen bids that are $30,000 apart, someone who has been told a wall is load bearing and does not know what that means for the budget. Our material assumes you are intelligent and busy, not that you already know construction vocabulary.
We cover the categories homeowners hire for most: kitchen and bathroom remodeling, roofing and gutters, siding and windows, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, flooring, decks and porches, concrete and masonry, additions and major renovations, and lawn and landscaping.
How we make money
Fixer Upper Pros is free for homeowners. We are paid by the contractors, home service companies and marketing partners who receive the project requests homeowners submit through this site, and in some cases we earn a fee when a homeowner we refer becomes a customer of one of those companies. That is the entire business model, and we would rather you know it now than infer it later.
Two consequences worth stating directly. First, a company appearing in a match result is a company that participates in our network, which is not the same thing as an endorsement or a certification by us. Second, you should still do your own verification. That is why our contractor vetting article tells you to check the license at the state board yourself rather than take anyone's word for it, including ours.
Editorial standards
Our articles are written and edited by our editorial team, separately from any commercial relationship. Specifically:
- No article placement is sold. A partner cannot buy a mention, a recommendation, or a favorable comparison in our editorial content.
- We do not name specific contractors, brands or products as "best" in our guidance. The advice is about process, because process is what transfers across markets and price points.
- We describe cost ranges as ranges and say when something is regional or varies by jurisdiction, because in home improvement it usually does.
- Articles carry a last updated date, and we revise rather than quietly delete when something changes.
- Our content is general information, not legal, financial or construction advice. Building codes, contractor licensing and mechanics lien rules are set locally, and your building department is the authority for your project.
If you find something on this site that is wrong or out of date, tell us. Corrections are the cheapest kind of quality control and we would rather hear it from you than from a reader who acted on it.
Text messages and your contact details
We contact you by text only if you checked a consent box asking us to, and the marketing and service consents are separate boxes that are unchecked by default. Message frequency is up to six messages per month per consent type, message and data rates may apply, consent is not required to use our services, and you can reply STOP at any time to stop messages or HELP for help. We do not sell, rent or trade your mobile number or your SMS consent to third parties for their own marketing. Full detail is in our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
